Lincoln Calling!

Britain, Britain, Britain… or amongst people from the continent commonly known as the land of bad weather, bad food and bad taste. But is it really all that bad? Or maybe even worse? I found out that England is not always as I expected it to be.

When I stepped off the plane in London Stansted it hit me at once. I was alone in a foreign country, well that was quite thrilling to be honest, but what really hit me in the face was the rain and the wind. Great! What the hell was I thinking when I decided to go to England? I could be lying on the beach right now! But well, too late to change my destination and Lincoln was already waiting!

The awful truth

Panoramaaufnahme der Kathedrale von Lincoln

Die Kathedrale von Lincoln, Großbritannien.

I was really looking forward to going to University in England. I had all these weird fantasies about learning something new, meeting mature people and having academic discussions about anything. But nothing like that happened so far. Going to University in Lincoln meant: Back to school. You get told what to do, self study is more or less optional, the lectures and seminars are too short to dig deeper and students are only 18 year old kids who like to party. Brilliant, what else have I been looking forward to? In my wild dreams I imagined myself making friends with natives. This is still a dream. We met lots of nice, kind people, but they are internationals themselves, mostly Germans, which means we‘re speaking German instead of English. Perfect conditions to learn a language!

The bright side of life

Not everything is bad about studying in England though. We already saw a lot of the country and have been very fortunate with the weather so far! England has lots to offer, especially when the sun is shining! Lincoln itself turned out to be small, but really beautiful! When you‘re in the cathedral quarter it feels like you‘re taken back to a different time and place. It is a strange feeling to be away from home and all of a sudden I feel so grown up. Not seeing people you usually see everyday, not being able to speak to your family whenever you want is hard. It just feels strange not to be at home. Suddenly you realize that there are things you miss and you learn to appreciate what you‘ve got back home!
