Your personal ÖH Elections Guide!

In this issue we would like to give you an overview of who is candidating in the upcoming ÖH* elections, what the PLUS stands for and what this »ÖH« is anyway. On the university level (»Universitätsvertretung«) the following are the top candidates for the PLUS**:

What is the »Universitätsvertretung«?

The Universitätsvertretung (lit.: University Representation, short UV) is the highest level of the Student Union. In Klagenfurt, there are 11 seats for student representatives, who are nominated by the fractions that you vote for during the ÖH Elections. The UV is in charge of representing the students‘ interests in front of the universitary administration (senate, university council, rectorate…) and the general public. Also, the UV nominates who will work in the numerous ÖH departements and choses six representatives that make sure the students‘ interests are heard in the Senate, the highest universitary commission. Finally, the UV is in charge of the ÖH‘s budget.

Don’t forget your student card!

The Studienvertretung (lit.: programme representation of students, short StV) is the first level in the ÖH. It deals with everything concerning the study programme it is in charge of. In the StV are mostly experienced students from the repective course who wish to help students, especially if they are just starting.

In the beginning of each semester, StV representatives help beginning students, organize the »Erstsemestrigen« Tutorials and are there to answer any questions and solve any problems regarding the study programme.

What can the PLUS do for me?

A strong independent group, that competently represents your interests on all levels of student union work is able to reach a lot more in most cases than party-backed, politically influenced organisations that serve as a steppingstone for the young footmen preparing their political careers. A platform of representatives with a backbone that are respected as hard, but constructive negotiators, a platform that has opened the ÖH Klagenfurt to every student, with or without political membership, thus increasing the number of actively participating, voluntarily working students by 300% … all of this has been achieved in the past, and there is still a lot of potential for freeing the Student Union from the clutches of politically inspired »student parties«.

Why is the colour of the PLUS purple?

When it was founded 10 years ago the PLUS‘ colour was green. After the GRAS‘ frist candidature the colour was changed to orange, which is the official colour of the FLÖ (see below), that was founded in the 80‘s.

This year, in order to finally create a distance to any political party, the colour orange was substitued with purple. We strongly believe that this is an unlikely colour to be picked by a political party in the future ;)

A selection of our ideas and goals

One of our biggest strengths is the diversity of our member. Because we do not have any party ideolody in the background, we are open to people with the most different ideas and ambitions. Here is a selection of our goals and ideas – for more detailed information, visit us at the PLUS stall in front of university.

Improvement of study conditions

List election ➔ you vote for the »party«*!
*the PLUS clearly distances itself from the idea of having a political party and consequently an ideology behind it. Hence the name »Platform of Independent Students«

Hier wählst du eine Fraktion und keine Person. Diese teilen sich dann je nach Wahlergebnis die elf Mandate in der Universitätsvertretung auf.

Bundesvertretung (Federal Representation of Students)

No direct vote ➔ Nomination by the University Representation!

Since the last elections, the national representation is not directly elected anymore. Two of the over 80 seats in the national committee are occupied by students from Klagenfurt. According to the election results the University Representation nominates the representatives. On a national level, the PLUS supports the equally independent »Unabhängige Fachschaftslisten Österreichs« (FLÖ).

ÖH-Referate (ÖH departements)

No direct vote ➔ Nomination by the University Representation

The ÖH departements cover a vast array of topics, ranging from educational policy, support for foreign students, culture and working students to the departement for gender equality and queer students, sports and financial aspects (and there‘s more…). The work of the involved students is invaluable for a pluralistic, functioning academic institution.
